Naoli grew up and lived in the rural area of San Andrés Tlalnelhuayocan, state of Veracruz, México, surrounded by the indigenous community of Rancho Viejo, made up of people, who largely lived from working the land and having their babies at home.
When she was 21 years old in 1986, she finished her degree in Anthropology.
In 1989 she began her independent midwifery practice in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico weaving together traditional Mexican midwifery wisdom with professional midwifery knowledge in her uniquely creative approach.
Naoli began apprenticing with traditional midwives in her native Mexico in 1987, as she received the calling to be a midwife through endless recurring dreams. The Rebozo is one of Mexican traditional midwives’ main tools for preventing and solving childbirth difficulties and Naoli fell in love with its direct, vast and gentle effectiveness.
Naoli trained as a professional midwife at Sage Femme and Maternidad La Luz, midwifery schools in the USA between the years of 1987 and 1990, becoming a Certified Professional Midwife by the NARM credentials (North America Registry of Midwives). Since then, Naoli has actively and tirelessly worked as a home birth midwife, weaving her understanding and practice of Traditional midwifery with her Professional midwifery training.
From her powerful and respectful homage payed to traditional midwifery and the recognition of the need to share knowledge between the different types of midwiferies, have come her first and many workshops entitled “Combining Traditional and Professional Midwifery”.
From 1993-1997 she worked actively as MANA’s (Midwives Alliance of North America) National Mexican Representative. Naoli organised the first 10 Midwifery Conferences in Mexico bringing for the first time Traditional and Professional midwives from all regions of Mexico, Guatemala, USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Perú, Italia, England, France and Germany in an ideological, professional and social setting.
Naoli currently resides in Florianópolis, Brazil and is a fully active midwife attending many births a year with her midwifery team Ama Nascer, (which she co-founded). The group consists of 6 active birth professionals offering care for women who come from around the world in: pregnancy, home birth and accompanied hospital birth, as well as all home postpartum care. The group also offers weekly birth classes to pregnant women and their families and specialized birth training for doulas and other birth professionals.
She is constantly furthering her education and has recently done an internship at the University Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany with Dr. Frank Lowen, who is a leading expert on breech births.
Up to date, Naoli has attended over 1700 home births with only 2% transfer rate to the hospital (in the last 20 years of her practice), with 0% maternal nor fetal deaths intra-partum. Naoli attributes this to the combination of clinical and intuitive attentiveness to the individual needs of each woman/baby, together with the use of many of the techniques she developed.
In the 35+ years that she has been a midwife, Naoli has invented and created many useful birth related tools and techniques, which she has generously shared with thousands of women and midwives around the globe.
She has a gift for story telling and loves the process of teaching, as just like births, it involves creativity, intuition and improvisation.
Naoli has has been invited as Keynote speaker at many birth conferences and has performed workshops, seminars and talks for the last 30 years in over 30 countries around the world.
“In my over 35 years as a midwife accompanying over 1700 home births, my own artistic and creative expression has dramatically stretched and expanded as I have in my practice, needed to overcome challenges in many diverse and extraordinary birth situations. My creativity and experience brought me to expand upon Traditional Mexican REBOZO practices, incorporating the old and the new REBOZO techniques together, and coming up with new ones of my own, which have come to be known as Naoli’s Original Rebozo techniques over my years of teaching.
Being a Mexican traditional Midwife and also a NARM Certified Professional Midwife, I am passionate about celebrating and growing with all of us together in THE ART OF BIRTH.”
